The Educational Programme „Hedgehog“ Integrates Literature, Estonian Language, History, and Environmental Studies

Since May 2026, primary and lower secondary school pupils will be able to take part in the educational programme „The Hedgehog“, based on Friedebert Tuglas’s children’s story of the same title. The programme integrates literature, Estonian language, history, and environmental studies.

Participants are introduced to the life and work of Friedebert Tuglas and to the story „The Hedgehog“, which serves as the basis for a range of educational activities and games. Pupils explore words used in the story that have since fallen out of everyday use and learn about the hedgehog’s diet and habits. The second half of the programme focuses on the hedgehog as an animal, encouraging participants to revisit the story from a new perspective. They learn how to behave responsibly if they encounter a hedgehog, discuss the challenges hedgehogs face today, and discover how to make home gardens more hedgehog-friendly.

The programme is intended for pupils in Grades 3–5, lasts approximately 45 minutes, and costs €2 per participant. Accompanying adults (teachers) participate free of charge.
